San Antonio–St. Edward’s University took the lead with 7:13 left to play and held off St. Mary’s University in a physical battle that included 52 fouls and 73 free throws for a 57-53 win in Heartland Conference men’s basketball action Thursday night at Bill Greehey Arena.

Curtis Mitchell (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis.) led the Rattlers with 13 points, while Nick Morey (Sr., Belpre, Ohio) added 10 points and nine rebounds. They were the only two Rattlers to score in double figures. Reggie Shanks was the only Hilltopper in double figures with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Both teams struggled from the field. St. Edward’s shot just 30.6 percent (15-49), while St. Mary’s shot just 32.6 percent (14-43). The Rattlers hit on just 1-of-11 shots from three-point range. The Hilltoppers outrebounded the Rattlers 40-37. Both teams committed 14 turnovers.

With the loss the Rattlers are now 7-8 overall and 2-2 in Heartland Conference play this season. St. Edward’s improved to 9-6 and 3-1. The Rattlers will return to action next Thursday when they host Texas A&M International University in the second game of a men’s/women’s doubleheader at 8 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena.
