San Antonio – The St. Mary’s University softball team fell behind early and couldn’t recover in both games they played on Friday afternoon at the St. Mary’s Division II College Classic, played at the San Antonio ISD Spring Sports Complex.

In the first game for the Rattlers, Marjorie Johnson allowed the Rattlers just one hit and the Savage Storm scored five runs over the first three innings to pick up the 5-2 win. After six scoreless innings against Johnson the Rattlers rallied in the bottom of the seventh. Lauren Miller (So., Baytown) was hit by a pitch to lead off and Jenna Saucedo (Sr., Elmendorf) and Heather Monroe (Jr., New Braunfels) followed with walks to load the bases. Nikki Flores (Sr., Friendswood) brought home the first run of the game with a fielder’s choice that scored Miller. Sade Moore (Sr., Angleton) followed with another fielder’s choice that scored Saucedo to make the score 5-2. However, Kelly Baker (So., Fort Worth) ground out to end the game.

In the second game Moore tripled to lead off and came home on a Chelsea Wenske (So., Victoria) double. Baker brought home Wenske with a single to make the score 2-0. However, the Pioneers responded with a single run in the second and then six more in the third to make the score 7-1. The Rattlers again staged a seventh inning rally to make a game of it. Lia Provence (So., Bastrop) doubled to lead off and Moore followed with a double to score Provence and make the score 7-4. Wenske and Nikki Flores walked to load the bases with one out, but Carley Case retired the next two batters to end the game.

With the losses St. Mary’s fell to 2-2 this season. The Rattlers will wrap up play at the St. Mary’s Division II Collegiate Classic on Saturday afternoon at 3:45 p.m., when they take on 21st-ranked Angelo State.
