San Antonio – Marcin Marczewski and Drew Zemanek both won their first tournament titles as St. Mary’s University players, leading the way for the Rattlers at the Mary Hardin-Baylor Spring Tennis Classic last Saturday at the Yvonne Le Tennis Center.

Marczewski (Fr., Gwiazozista, Poland) won all three of his matches in straight sets to claim the title in Flight 2 Men’s Singles. He defeated Rattler teammate Marcos Villarreal (So., Corpus Christi), 7-5, 6-3, in the championship to claim the title. Villarreal finished the tournament as the runner-up with a 2-1 record.

Marczewski teamed up with Zemanek (So., La Porte) to win the Flight 1 Men’s Doubles title at the tournament as well. They defeated Chris Lawson and David Williams of Temple College, 8-5, in the championship to claim the crown. The duo dropped just nine games in the three matches they played in the tournament.

In the Flight 1 Men’s Singles Vitas Van Dijk (So., Paramaribo, Suriname) took third place, defeating Alex Lam of Schreiner in the third place match, 6-0, 6-3. Carlos Albuja (Jr., New Braunfels) took fifth place in Flight 1, defeating Nick Parker of Schreiner, 6-3, 6-3. Zemanek also placed fifth in Flight 3 Men’s Singles, winning 6-2, 6-0, over Ramon Aguirre of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Salvador Lievanos (Fr., El Paso) took fourth place in Flight 4 Men’s Singles, while Luis Delgado (Fr., El Paso) was sixth.

Both Rattler tennis teams will return to action this Friday when they host the University of the Incarnate Word at 11 a.m. at the outdoor tennis courts. The scheduled match between the Rattlers and St. Edward’s University for today was postponed due to rain.
