San Antonio – Danny Kelly and Rodrigo Ramos each scored their first two goals of the season, but a second half comeback helped Texas A&M-International University pick up a 2-2 tie with St. Mary’s University in the Heartland Conference opener for both teams Monday night. The Rattler women fell on the road to Missouri Southern State University by a 3-0 count.
Kelly (So., Tucscon, Ariz.) gave the Rattlers a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute when he took a pass from Stephen Gamez (Fr., San Antonio) and ripped the net. Ramos (Jr., The Woodlands) followed with his first goal of the season in the 40th minute to make it 2-0. That was where the score stood at the half.
But in a game that featured 12 cautions and two red cards, the Rattlers were not able to hold off a TAMIU team that played a man up for the entire second half. Roy Hernandez scored twice in a six minute period, including one a penalty kick that tied the game.
Brett Collier (Sr., Schertz) held on from there, picking up nine saves. St. Mary’s is now 2-1-1 overall and 0-0-1 in Heartland Conference play. TAMIU is 0-1-1, 0-0-1. The Rattlers will return to action on Friday when they host St. Thomas University at 3:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s University Soccer Field.
In the women’s game, Roxie Carrasco (So., San Antonio) made a season-best 11 saves, but the Rattler offensive had just eight shots in a 3-0 loss.
With the loss, St. Mary’s fell to 0-4-1 this season, while MSSU improved to 2-2. St. Mary’s will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 13, when they travel to Commerce to face Texas A&M University-Commerce at noon.
