San Antonio – Armen Allahverdian tipped a loose ball into the net in the 52nd minute for the only goal of the game as the University of St. Thomas defeated St. Mary’s University, 1-0, in men’s soccer action Friday afternoon at a very soggy St. Mary’s University Soccer Field.

More than two inches of rain fell on the San Antonio area over the last two days, making the field a muddy mess. The game was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams having scoring opportunities in the first half, but not able to cash in. In the seven minute of the second half, the Celts cashed in. Allahverdian was one of several players battling for the ball in front of the Rattler net, when the ball was tipped to him, he quickly settled it and found the upper left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.

From there Lukas Simon picked up his second shutout of the season to make the goal stand up. Brett Collier (Sr., Schertz) was the tough luck loser, making four saves.

With the loss, St. Mary’s fell to 2-2-1 this season, while St. Thomas improved to 2-1-2. The Rattlers will return to action on Sunday when they host 14th-ranked Midwestern State University at 1 p.m. at St. Mary’s University Soccer Field.
