San Antonio – Troy Thompson scored the go-ahead goal in the 76th minute, lifting the University of the Incarnate Word to a 2-1 victory over short-handed St. Mary’s University in Heartland Conference men’s soccer action Friday afternoon at St. Mary’s University Soccer Field.

The teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half, with just a total of eight shots, including just one on goal. However, the second half was a different game. A total of five cautions and two ejections changed the face of the game. Daniel Sanguietti (Jr., Tucson, Ariz.) received his second caution in the 65th minute and Aaron Strother (Sr., Plano) was ejected from the game in the 71st minute.

UIW took the lead in the 59th minute when Jonathon Barabin headed in a free kick by Callum Riley. In the 72nd minute, just after the Rattlers went down to just nine men, Adam Villanueva (Sr., DeSoto) took a free kick from 30 yards out and found the right corner of the net, tying the game at 1-1. But just four minutes later Troy Thompson gave the Cardinals the lead when he took a pass from Tony Reyes and ripped the net to make it a 2-1 Cardinal lead.

UIW outshot the Rattlers 11-6 in the game and took six corner kicks to three for the Rattlers. Brett Collier (Sr., Schertz) made two saves in goal for the Rattlers.

St. Mary’s fell to 5-11-1 overall and 3-5-1 in Heartland Conference play with the loss. UIW improved to 8-7-3, 6-3-0. The Rattlers will wrap up the 2009 season when they host St. Edward’s University on Sunday at 1 p.m. at St. Mary’s University Soccer Field.
