San Antonio–Freshmen Brad Hubenak and Kevin Kotzur combined to score 26 points and pull down 22 rebounds, leading St. Mary’s University to a convincing, 59-43, win in non-conference men’s basketball action Tuesday night at Bill Greehey Arena.

Hubenak (Fr., Kennedale, Texas) made 5-of-9 shots from the field to score 10 points, then added a season-high 14 rebounds. Kotzur (Fr., La Vernia, Texas) hit on 7-of-19 shots from the field to score a game-high 16 points and pulled down 8 rebounds of his own. Curtis Mitchell (Sr., Milwaukee) and Darren Lee (Sr., Stockton, Calif.) each added 10 points.

The Rattlers struggled from the field, hitting on just 37.1 percent of their shots (26-70) and 3-of-15 from three-point range, but a 56-28 edge in rebounding was the difference for the Rattlers. St. Mary’s also outrebounded the Rams, 28-8 on the offensive glass.

The Rattlers started the game slow, falling behind 10-2 to start the game on a Joel Jones three-pointer with 15:24 left in the first half. However, the Rattlers started to pound the ball inside, which paid immediate dividends. The Rattlers went on a 11-2 run, keyed by six points from Kotzur, to take a 13-12 lead with 12:54 left. HTU retook the lead on a Titus Butler layup, but St. Mary’s took control with 12-2 run that gave them a 27-18 lead with 3:34 left in the first half. A Kotzur dunk late gave the Rattlers a nine-point edge into the locker room.

With the win St. Mary’s broke a three-game losing streak and improved to 3-4 this season. HTU remained winless at 0-5. St. Mary’s will return to action on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., when they travel to Kingsville, Texas, to face Texas A&M University in a non-conference game.
