Alex Carraman hit a three-run homerun and Lea Padilla limited St. Mary’s University to just five hits over six innings as the University of the Incarnate Word advanced to the Heartland Conference Tournament Championship game with a 5-3 win Friday afternoon at Rattler Field.

The Cardinals started the game with four straight hits off St. Mary’s starter Taryn Munoz (Jr., Bulverde), with Carraman smashing her 11th homerun of the season to give the Cardinals the early 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first the Rattlers responded. Kelly Baker (So., Arlington) smacked an RBI single to make it a 3-1 game and Arlynda Flores (Jr., Uvalde) followed with her 24th homerun of the season, tying the game at 3-3. That bomb tied the St. Mary’s single-season school record and also tied her first first in the nation in homeruns this season.

In the second inning the Cardinals continued their hot hitting, putting up two more runs, this time against Flores, who took over on the mound. Carolina Flores singled home a run and Carraman drove in her fourth run of the game with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-3.

After that the game went from a shootout to a pitchers duel as Padilla and Flores traded goose-eggs for the next five innings. After allowing two hits and three runs in the first inning Padilla allowed just three more over the final five innings. Flores allowed three hits in the second inning, but allowed just three more over the final five innings to keep the Rattlers in the game.

Heather Monre (Jr., New Braunfels) singled to lead off in the seventh inning, chasing Padilla. Amanda Sparks then came in and retired the final three Rattler batters to pick up her fifth save of the season. Padilla improved to 11-18 with the win.

St. Mary’s saw its season come to an end with the loss. They finished 32-32. UIW is now 28-32 and will face St. Edward’s University in the Heartland Conference Championship game at noon on Saturday.

Taryn Munoz allowed just one run over five innings, while Kelly Baker smacked her 12th homerun of the season to lead the offense as St. Mary’s University stayed alive at the Heartland Conference Tournament with an 8-1 win over the University of Texas of the Permian Basin Friday afternoon at Rattler Field.

The Rattlers jumped out to a big early lead and cruised to the win. In the first inning Jenna Saucedo (Sr., Elmendorf) smacked a two-run single as the Rattlers scored three to take the early lead. In the third inning Baker (So., Arlington) smacked the solo homerun and the Rattlers added another run to take a 5-0 lead. In the fourth inning Arylnda Flores (Jr., Uvalde) hit an RBI single and Baker brought home another run with a walk as the Rattlers took an 8-0 lead. UTPB broke up the shutout in the fifth on an RBI double by Jennifer Oso.

Munoz (Jr., Bulverde) picked up her 17th win of the season, allowing one run on four hits, while striking out four. Erica Hollingsworth fell to 10-16 with the loss.

(#1) St. Edward’s 8, (#3) Incarnate Word 3

St. Edward’s University scored seven runs over the final three innings to rally from a two-run deficit and defeat the University of the Incarnate Word, 8-3, on the second day of the Heartland Conference Softball Tournament, Friday afternoon at Rattler Field.

The Cardinals took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Lea Padilla smacked a homerun just over the glove of Jamie Zilverberg in rightfield. The hit was just the second of the game and gave the Cardinals a two-run lead.

That all changed in the top of the fifth inning as St. Edward’s put together five straight hits to start the inning, leading to three runs and giving the Hilltoppers the lead back at 4-3. One inning later SEU put the game away with three more runs on three hits and a key error.

Diana Cezeaux picked up her 15th win of the season against 10 losses in relief, allowing just one baserunner in four innings of work. Amanda Sparks fell to 15-11 with the loss.

With the win St. Edward’s advances to Saturday’s championship game against the winner Friday night’s semifinal game at 5 p.m. Incarnate Word will be in that semifinal game against the winner of the St. Mary’s-Texas-Permian Basin matchup.

(#2) St. Mary’s 6, (#4) Texas A&M-International 4

Kelly Baker had three hits and drove in two runs, while freshman Michelle Soto came on in relief to save the day as St. Mary’s University stayed alive at the Heartland Conference Tournament, defeating the Dustdevils of Texas A&M-International University, 6-4.

Soto (Fr., San Antonio) came on in relief of Arlynda Flores (Jr., Uvalde) with one out and the bases loaded in the sixth inning. She retired back-to-back batters in the sixth to keep the Rattlers in the lead, then allowed just one baserunner in the seventh to seal up the win. She picked up her second save of the season. Flores improved to 14-12 with the win.

After smashing her 11th homerun of the season in the first game of the day, Baker (So., Arlington) went 3-for-3 with a two-run single in the third inning. Chelsea Wenske (So., Shiner) smashed her seventh homerun of the game. Lia Provence (So., Bastrop) and Nikki Flores (Sr., Friendswood) each had two hits int he game.

With the win the Rattlers advance to a second elimination game on Friday at 2:30 p.m. against the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. St. Mary’s is now 31-31 this season. TAMIU fell to 25-31 and saw their 2009 season come to an end.

Back-to-back homeruns by Courtney Lavender and Stacy Giles in the bottom of the sixth inning broke a scoreless tie and lifted St. Edward’s University to a 2-0 win over upset-mind the University of Texas of the Permian Basin in the third game of the Heartland Conference Softball Tournament.

St. Edward’s Paige Sandahl and UTPB’s Erica Hollingsworth traded goose-eggs for six innings. Finally Hollingsworth, who threw all 14 innings for the Falcons finally tired and Lavender and Giles smacked homeruns to left-centerfield on back-to-back pitches.

Diana Cezaux came on in relief to pick up the win. She improved to 14-10 with the victory. Hollingsworth was the tough-luck loser, dropping to 10-16.

(#3) Incarnate Word 7, (#2) St. Mary’s 6

Lea Padilla’s RBI single in the top of the sixth inning gave the University of the Incarnate Word the lead for good and they held off St. Mary’s University for a 7-6 win in the second game of the Heartland Conference Tournament, Thursday afternoon at Rattler Field.

The game went back-and-forth with three ties and three lead changes. The Rattlers took an early 2-0 lead on an RBI single by in the second inning. UIW responded with a pair of runs in the top of the third. The teams traded runs over the next two innings. The Cardinals took a 5-3 lead on a Padilla double and a sacrifice fly by Sarah Holub in the fifth. The Rattlers came right back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-6 lead. Kelly Baker’s (So., Arlington) two-homerun was the big blow in the inning. That set up Padilla’s heroics in the sixth.

Amanda Sparks picked up her 15th win of the season, while Taryn Munoz (Jr., Bulverde) took the loss. Lia Provence (So. Bastrop) went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored to lead the Rattlers at the plate.

With the win Incarnate Word improved to 27-31 and advanced to Saturday’s winner’s bracket game against the winner of the St. Edward’s-Texas-Permian Basin game at noon on Friday. St. Mary’s fell to 30-31 and will face Texas A&M-International at 6:30 p.m. Thursday night.

Texas-Permian Basin 7, Texas A&M-International 2

Krista Chesworth hit the tie-breaking three-run double in the fourth inning and Erica Hollingsworth tossed a complete game victory on the mound as the University of Texas of the Permian Basin defeated Texas A&M-International University in the first round of Heartland Conference Softball Tournament, Friday morning at Rattler Field.

TAMIU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a single by Raynelle Tagle and an error by Kayla Hogan. UTPB responded with four runs in the top of the fifth, keyed by a bases-clearing double by Chesworth with two outs. The Falcons added three more runs in the top of the sixth inning to put the game away.

UTPB improved to 15-39, while TAMIU fell to 25-30. UTPB advanced to play top-seeded St. Edward’s University at 4 p.m. Friday afternoon. TAMIU will face the loser of the St. Mary’s-Incarnate Word game at 1:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.
