ODESSA – Arlynda Flores smacked three homeruns and picked up the win in game one, while Kelly Baker smashed two homeruns and drove in eight runs, helping St. Mary’s University to a sweep of the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, 6-2, 19-7, in Heartland Conference softball action Friday afternoon at the UTPB Softball Field.

Flores (Jr., Uvalde) allowed two runs on seven hits, while striking out nine to improve to 7-8 this season on the mound. In the first game she went 2-for-3 with a solo homerun and three runs scored. In the second game she was 5-for-5 with two homeruns, two RBI and four runs scored. Baker (So., Arlington) went 1-for-4 with an RBI and run scored in game one, then followed that up by going 4-of-6 with two homeruns, seven RBI and three runs scored in the second game.

In the second game the Rattlers scored six first inning runs to take the lead for good. They finished off the game with seven runs in the top of the seventh inning. The Rattlers had a season-high 19 runs and 22 hits in the win. Taryn Munoz (Jr., Bulverde) picked up her ninth win of the season, going the distance in the second game.

With the sweep, St. Mary’s improved to 17-18 overall and 9-1 in Heartland Conference play this season. UTPB fell to 2-29 and 0-10. The teams will wrap up their four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at noon.
