Austin – Michael Brzezinski had five hits and drove in eight runs in the doubleheader as St. Mary’s University split a doubleheader against St. Edward’s University Friday afternoon in Heartland Conference baseball action Friday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field.

Brzezinski (Sr., Helotes) went a combined 5-for-10 with eight RBI and four runs scored in the doubleheader for the Rattlers. In the first game he went 3-for-5 with a double and five RBI. St. Mary’s built up an 8-0 lead over the first three innings and cruised to the easy 15-9 win. Danny Cantu (Sr., Laredo), Jonathon Cisneros (Jr., San Antonio) and Tyler Migl (Fr., San Antonio) each had three hits in the game for the Rattlers. Braxton Watson (Sr., Spring) picked up the win to improve to 4-2 this season.

In the second game the Hilltoppers took a big early lead and looked to have the game locked up at 10-2 after seven innings. However, the Rattlers picked up one run in the eighth and Brzezinski wrapped up a seven-run rally in the top of the ninth inning, smacking his third homerun of the season to tie the score at 10-10 and send the game into extra innings. The Hilltoppers ended the affair in the bottom of the tenth on an RBI single by Daniel Ruffini.

With the split St. Mary’s is now 26-13 overall and 23-10 in Heartland Conference play this season. St. Edward’s is now 25-15, 23-12. St. Mary’s will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Stephenville to face Tarleton State University in a non-conference matchup starting at 3 p.m.
