Laredo – Texas A&M International University scored seven runs in the third inning and never trailed again on their way to a sweep of 22nd-ranked St. Mary’s University in Heartland Conference baseball action Friday afternoon at Dustdevil Field.

In the first game Jorge Guarneros limited St. Mary’s to just two runs on six hits, with both runs coming on solo homeruns in the fourth inning. He struck out four and walked none to improve to 9-4 this season. Braxton Watson (Sr., Spring) took the loss and is 7-3 this season.

In the second game Scott Shimek (Sr., Shiner) suffered just his third loss of the season, allowing seven runs on 12 hits and three walks in six innings of work. He is now 10-3 this season. Roger Gonzales was strong for eight innings before running into trouble in the ninth. The Rattlers picked up three runs in the ninth inning and had the tying run on base before relief pitcher Danny Navarro finally ended the threat.

Jonathon Cisneros (Jr., San Antonio) had a strong day at the plate, going a combined 5-of-8 in the doubleheader with two doubles, a homerun, an RBI and three runs scored. Colin Stock (So., Klamath Falls, Ore.) smacked two homeruns.

With the losses St. Mary’s fell to 35-17 overall and 31-14 in Heartland Conference play. TAMIU improved to 22-33, 20-28. The two teams will wrap up their series on Saturday with a single game starting at noon.
