San Antonio – Jonathon Cisneros and Weston Baros had three hits each, while Reagan Moczygemba smacked a three-run homerun to back up the pitching of Alfonso Maldonado as 22nd-ranked St. Mary’s University split a doubleheader with Newman University, 8-2, 4-5, at V.J. Keefe Memorial Stadium on Monday afternoon.

Maldonado (Jr., Laredo) allowed just two runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings of work to improve to 5-4 this season. The game was a tight-knit affair until the bottom of the fourth inning. Tyler Migl (Fr., San Antonio) smacked an RBI single to break the 1-1 tie. Cisneros (Jr., San Antonio) followed with a two-run single and Baros (So., San Antonio) had an RBI single as well. Moczygemba (So., Bulverde) sealed the win for the Rattlers with a three-homerun, his second of the season, in the sixth inning.

In the second game of the day, the Rattlers took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning on a two-run David Vaio (Sr., San Antonio) single. However the Jets responded with four runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 5-2 lead. That was where things stood entering the bottom of the seventh inning. Pinch hitter Colin Stock (So., Klamath Falls, Ore.) led off with a double and pinch runner Josh McElroy (Fr., San Antonio) scored one out later on a single by Michael Brzezinski (Sr., Helotes) to make it a 5-3 Newman lead. Cisneros then made it a one-run game with an RBI double to right center. But Baros flied to end the threat.

Jonathon Perez (Fr., San Antonio) took the loss, falling to 1-1 this season. He allowed five runs on five hits and one walk, while striking out four.

With the split St. Mary’s is now 30-14 overall and 26-11 in Heartland Conference play. Newman is 24-21, 20-19. The Rattlers will return to action this Friday when they host a key Heartland Conference series against cross-town rival the University of the Incarnate Word at 2 p.m. at V.J.
