Austin – Scott Shimek picked up his eighth win of the season and St. Mary’s University took advantage of four St. Edward’s University errors to roll past the Hilltoppers in the first game of their Heartland Conference series, 18-4, Thursday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field.

The Rattlers broke out on top early and never looked back in the win. In the second inning, the Rattlers scored six runs on just two hits, but took advantage of six walks and two Hilltopper errors to take the big early lead. Tyler Migl (Fr., San Antonio) smacked a two-run single in the inning and Jonathon Cisneros (Jr., San Antonio) later plated two runs with a single of his own.

In the fifth inning the Rattlers put the game away with eight runs on five hits, four walks and two more Hilltoppers errors. Colin Stock (So., Klamath Falls, Ore.) had a two-run double and Weston Baros (So., San Antonio) also brought home a run with a single.

With the win the Rattlers improved to 25-12 overall and 22-9 in Heartland Conference play. They pulled into a tie with the University of Texas of the Permian Basin for first in the Heartland Conference. St. Edward’s dropped to 24-14, 22-11, one game behind both St. Mary’s and UTPB. The two teams will wrap up their three-game series on Friday with a doubleheader, starting at noon.
