San Antonio – Kyle Frets and Matt Ortiz combined to hold St. Mary’s University to just six hits over nine innings as the University of Texas of the Permian Basin defeated the Rattlers, 4-2, in the final game of their three-game series Saturday afternoon at V.J. Keefe Memorial Stadium.

Frets was strong for 5 1/3 innings, but ran into trouble in the fifth. Michael Brzezinski (Sr., Helotes) singled with one out and one batter later Weston Baros (So., San Antonio) lined a double down the leftfield line to score Brzezinski with the first run of the game. That cut the UTPB lead to just 2-1. However in the top of the seventh inning the Falcons picked up two runs to put the game out of reach at 4-1.

Alfonso Maldonado (Jr., Laredo, Texas) took the loss for the Rattlers, falling to 4-4. He allowed two runs on 10 hits and one walk in 4 2/3 innings of work. Frets picked up the win to improve to 3-0 this season. He allowed one run on five hits and four walks in 5 1/3 innings. Matt Ortiz pitched the final 3 2/3 innings to earn his second save of the season.

With the loss St. Mary’s fell to 24-12 overall and 21-9 in Heartland Conference. UTPB improved to 26-11, 22-9. The Rattlers will return to action on Thursday, April 9 when they travel to Austin to face St. Edward’s University in a single game starting at 2 p.m.
