San Antonio – Thirteenth-ranked St. Mary’s University committed seven errors as eighth ranked Abilene Christian University built up a big early lead, then held off a late Rattler challenge for an 11-7 Wildcat win in non-conference baseball action Tuesday night at Crutcher Scott Field.

ACU took advantage of the Rattlers errors to take a 6-0 lead in the third inning. The Wildcat lead would increase to 11-2 before the Rattlers rallied in the ninth inning. Derek Gonzalez (Jr., San Antonio) led off with a single and Ryan Morrow (So., Bulverde) followed with a walk. Josh McElroy (Fr., Helotes) walked to load the bases and Billy Richard (Fr., Schertz) brought home a run with a single to left. Tyler Migl (Fr., San Antonio) walked to bring home Morrow and cut the deficit to 11-4. One out later Jonathon Cisneros (Jr., San Antonio) smacked a two-run single to make it an 11-6 game. David Vaio (Sr., San Antonio) kept the rally going with an RBI single. But relief pitcher Kyle Korbal ended the threat striking out the final two Rattler batters.

Jonathon Perez (Fr., San Antonio) took the loss in his first collegiate start, allowing three earned runs on five hits and a walk in two innings. He fell to 0-1 this season with the loss. Kevin Justice picked up the win for ACU, improving to 2-1.

With the loss the Rattlers fell to 11-4 this season, while ACU improved to 11-3. St. Mary’s will return to action on Friday when they travel to Wichita, Kan., to face Newman University in the first two games of a four-game series starting at 4 p.m.
