San Antonio – Scott Shimek tossed a four-hit complete game, helping 13th-ranked St. Mary’s University to a 4-1 win in the second game of a Heartland Conference baseball doubleheader against the University of Texas of the Permian Basin Friday at Roden Field. UTPB won the first game 6-4.

Shimek (Sr., Shiner) allowed just one run on four hits and walked five, while striking out five to improve to 2-0 this season. He did not have a 1-2-3 inning in the game, but didn’t allow a runner past second base after the first inning.

After falling behind in the first inning the Rattlers rallied to take the lead in the top of the fourth inning off UTPB starter Flynn Stachowski. With one out Danny Cantu (Sr., Laredo) singled to right and stole second. Ryan Morrow (So., Bulverde) then slapped a single through the right side of the infield to score Cantu and tie the game at 1-1. One out later Billy Richard (Fr., Schertz) singled to put runners on the corners. An error by Carson Grizzard allowed Michael Brzezinski (Sr., Helotes) to reach and Morrow and Richard scored to give the Rattlers a 3-1 lead. Reagan Moczygemba (So., Bulverde) singled home the final run of the game in the sixth.

In the first game of the day three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the Falcons a 6-2 lead and a late rally by the Rattlers fell just short. Braxton Watson (Sr., Spring) suffered his first loss of the season, falling to 1-1.

With the split the Rattlers are now 7-1 overall and 5-1 in Heartland Conference play this season. UTPB is 5-3, 3-2. The two teams will wrap up their four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at noon.
