San Antonio – Elizabeth Redmond and Elizabeth Hoffman each tallied goals, but it wasn’t enough as St. Mary’s University fell for the second straight time to open the 2008 season, 3-2, against Grand Canyon University Saturday night. The Rattlers dropped a 1-0 decision in double-overtime to open the season against Embry-Riddle.

In the Rattlers loss to Grand Canyon, the Antelopes scored three first-half goals before the Rattlers rallied.  Redmond (Sr., San Dimas, Calif.) took in a corner kick from Marcey Morales (Sr., Lytle) and found the back of the net to cut the deficit to 3-1. Twenty-one minutes later Hoffman (Sr., Plano) took in a pass from Ana Primera (Jr., San Antonio) smacked the ball into the upper corner to make it a one-goal game with 14 minutes to play. However, that was as close as the Rattlers would get, and they lost by the one-goal score.

Roxana Carasco (Fr., El Paso) came off the bench and made 11 saves to help keep the Rattlers in the game.

In the season opener for the Rattlers, Thursday night in Prescott, the Rattlers and the Embry-Riddle Eagles battled to a scoreless tie through regulation. Then with just 53 seconds left in overtime Brittany Murillo headed a corner kick into the net for the only goal of the game.

With the losses St. Mary’s is now 0-2 on the season. Grand Canyon is now 1-2 this season, while Embry-Riddle is 1-0. The Rattlers will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 11 when they travel to Ada, Okla. to face East Central University in a non-conference matchup.
