ODESSA – Marianne Hubnik scored two goals in less than five minutes early in the second half, breaking open a scoreless game, and lifting the University of Texas of the Permian Basin to a 2-0 win against St. Mary’s University in Heartland Conference women’s soccer action.

The teams combined for 12 shots in the first half, but neither was able to break through as the game went into the halftime break scoreless. It didn’t take the Falcons long to score in the second half. Brandy Watts sent a pass to Hubnik in the penalty area and Hubnik turned and beat Roxana Carrasco (Fr., San Antonio) for the first goal of the game at the 48:50 mark. It took just 4:14 for the Falcons to increase the lead. Hubnik was again the recipient of a Watts pass, making the score 2-0 for UTPB.

The Rattlers outshot the Falcons 14-12 in the game, but did not get one past goalkeeper Lyndsey Thomas, who recorded the shutout with four saves. Carrasco also made four saves, but was saddled with the loss.

With the loss, the Rattlers dropped their fifth straight game and are now 1-9-1 overall, 0-4 in Heartland Conference play. UTPB improved to 5-7-1 and 2-1. St. Mary’s will return to action on Friday at 3 p.m. when they host the University of the Incarnate Word at the St. Mary’s University Soccer Field.
