GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Matt Vela fired an even-par 216 to place 10th individually, helping the St. Mary’s University men’s golf team to a fifth place finish at the Grand Canyon Fall Invitational, played at the Golf Club of Estrella on Tuesday.

Vela (So., San Antonio) fired two rounds of par or better, including a second round 69, tying for his second best round as a Rattler. He finished with a 216 (72-69-75) to tie for 10th overall. Sam Cyr of Point Loma Nazarene University took medalist honors with a three-round total of 201 (60-70-71). Gene Webster of CSU-San Bernardino placed second with a 207 (68-70-69).

Sam Jernigan (Fr., San Antonio) placed 19th with a 220 (75-71-74), Preston Akromis (Sr., San Antonio) was 26th with a 222 (76-74-72), Alex Maurer (Sr., St. Louis, Mo.) was 40th with a 227 (78-74-75) and James Grant (Jr., San Antonio) was 65th with a 232 (73-75-84).

California State University-San Bernardino won the team title with a 21-under par 843 (280-280-283), while Point Loma Nazarene was second with an 865. California State University-Monterey Bay was third with an 869, Western New Mexico University was fourth with an 876 and St. Mary’s was fifth with an 880 (296-288-296).

The Rattlers will finish the fall season on Oct. 13 when they travel to Duncanville, Okla., to compete in the Cameron University Invitational.
