San Antonio – Fifteenth-ranked St. Mary’s University will host the 2008 Heartland Conference Softball Tournament, Thursday through Sunday at Rattler Field on the campus of St. Mary’s University.

St. Mary’s won the regular season title in the Heartland Conference with a nearly perfect 26-2 record, two games ahead of second place St. Edward’s. The Rattlers are 26-5 at home this season, the third most wins at home in school history. St. Mary’s is 22-1 all-time in Heartland Conference Tournament play and has won all seven previous tournaments.

Senior Malissa Magee (Katy, Texas) is having her best season as a Rattler. She is 33-6 with a 1.20 ERA, both the best marks in the Heartland Conference. She has set a school record, striking out 299 batters in just 245.2 innings. She has been named Heartland Conference Pitcher of the Week six times and earned the NFCA National Player of the Week.

Junior shortstop Sade Moore (Angleton, Texas) has blossomed into one of the top offensive players in the Heartland Conference this season. She is hitting .448 for the season, the best mark in the Heartland Conference, and has hit five doubles and three triples. She has driven in 21 runs and scored 51. Her 32 stolen bases are second in the conference.

This year’s team has already hit 50 wins, which ties for the second most in school history. Only two other teams have won 50 games in school history, the 2002 national champions, who set the school record with 58 wins, and the 2003 Rattlers, who advanced to the College World Series with 50 victories.

The tournament will start at 11 a.m. Thursday with fourth-seeded Lincoln University against fifth-seeded Oklahoma Panhandle State University. In the second game the third seeded University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals will take on second-seeded St. Edward’s University at 1:30 p.m. The Rattlers will face the winner of the LU/OPSU game at 4 p.m. The tournament championship will be on Saturday at 2 p.m. If a second championship game is needed, it will start at 4:30 p.m.
