LAREDO – Amanda Anderson and Matt Vela each placed sixth individually, helping the St. Mary’s University women’s golf team to a second place finish, while the men finished third at the Texas A&M International Dustdevil Invitational Tuesday afternoon at the Laredo Country Club.
For the men Matt Vela (Fr., San Antonio) shot a final round 76 to finish with a 221 (71-74-76), good for sixth overall. He finished 11 strokes behind individual winner Blake Worden of Texas A&M University-Commerce, who ran away with the individual title, winning by six strokes over second place Shane Pearce of the University of Texas-Pan American.
James Grant (So., San Antonio) and Jerry Holguin (Fr., San Antonio) each tied for seventh overall with identical 223s. Jimmy Willingham (Sr., San Antonio) was 11th with a three-round total of 224.
Texas-Pan American won the team title with an 876 (300-278-298), while Texas A&M-Commerce was second with an 885. St. Mary’s took third with an 890.
On the women’s side Amanda Anderson (Jr., San Antonio) took sixth, despite a final round 85 (77-85 – 162). Mariale Carmey of Texas-Pan America won the individual title with a two-round total of 153 (74-79), with teammate Haley Hocott finishing one stroke back.
Ursula Perez (Fr., San Antonio) placed in a tie for ninth overall with teammate Jenna Wessels (So., Katy) with 172s. Marie Hulsey (So., El Paso) finished 18th with a 184.
In the team standings St. Mary’s finished second to Texas-Pan American, who won the tournament with a two-round total of 627.
The women’s golf team will return to action on Feb. 16-17 at the Tarleton State University Invitational in Granbury. The men’s team will play next on Feb. 18-19 at the St. Edward’s University Invitational in Austin.
