San Antonio – Malissa Magee and Taryn Munoz each tossed seven strong innings, helping ninth-ranked St. Mary’s University to a sweep of Saginaw Valley State University, 6-0, 3-1, in non-conference softball action Saturday afternoon at Rattler Field.

In game one Magee (Sr., Katy) was dominant one day after shutting out fifth-ranked Angelo State University. She tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits, while striking out 10 to improve to 12-2 overall. With the game scoreless after two innings, the Rattlers broke through in the third frame. Arlynda Flores (So., Uvalde) singled to lead off and after Sarah Cooper (Sr., Houston) hit into a fielder’s choice, Sade Moore (Jr., Angleton) reached on a bunt single. Mary K Pederson (Sr., Houston) smacked a double to left-center, scoring Cooper. A wild pitch by starting pitcher Kari Bowbly allowed Moore to score and Kelcy Walker (Sr., San Antonio) reached on an infield single to score Pederson and pinch runner Elizabeth Joyce (So., San Antonio) wrapped up the four-run inning by stealing home to make it 4-0.

Game two was a pitcher’s duel between Jade Fulton of SVSU and Munoz (So., Bulverde). For five innings it looked as if Fulton would get the better of it, leading 1-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth. With one out Walker singled and Chelsea Wenske (Fr., Shiner) doubled to score Walker with the tying run. Then two innings later the Rattlers won the game when Walker hit a fielder’s choice that brought home Moore with the game-winning run.

Magee picked up her second win of the doubleheader to improve to 13-2, pitching a perfect eighth inning for the win. Munoz allowed just one run on three hits, while striking out four in seven inning, but had to settle for the no-decision.

With the wins the Rattlers are now 16-4 overall, while Saginaw Valley State falls to 1-3. St. Mary’s will return to action on Sunday when they host Abilene Christian University in a non-conference doubleheader starting at noon at Rattler Field.
