San Antonio – St. Mary’s University softball coach Donna Fields announced on Wednesday the signing of San Antonio native Shelly Lee to a national letter of intent to play for the Rattlers, starting with the 2009-10 academic year. Lee is the first signee for the Rattlers for next season.

Lee comes to St. Mary’s after three strong years at Sandra Day O’Connor High School, playing for coach Anne Lewis at O’Connor High School. In 2007 she was a first team all-district selection and San Antonio Express-News Super Team honoree in the outfield after hitting .444. Last season she again earned first team all-district honors, this time at catcher, after battling .490. She has helped lead OHS to three straight playoff appearances, including the area finals in 2007. Off the field she is a member of the National Honor Society and the Honor Roll.

The Rattlers ended the 2008 season with a record of 53-12 overall, including a 26-2 mark in Heartland Conference play. The Rattlers won the Heartland Conference regular season and tournament titles for the first time. They won the Heartland Conference Tournament for the eighth straight season and also advanced to the NCAA Division II South Central Region Tournament for the eighth straight season. St. Mary’s will open the 2009 season on Feb. 5 when they host Eastern New Mexico in the first round of the St. Mary’s Invitational.
