SAN ANGELO – Malissa Magee tossed eight strong innings, but 11th-ranked St. Mary’s University could only manage two hits against Katie Peterson as Midwestern State upset the second-seeded Rattlers, 2-0 in eight innings on the first day of the NCAA Division II South Central Region Tournament, played at the Angelo State University Softball Complex on Wednesday.

Magee (Sr., Katy) allowed just two unearned runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out nine in eight innings. She fell to 36-7 with the loss. However, Peterson allowed just three base runners – and only one to third base – in the game. Peterson improved to 26-8 with the win.

Peterson retired the first 12 batters she faced before Lindsay Barnes (Sr., San Antonio) singled to lead off in the fifth inning. Tedlin Nieto (Jr., Pearsall) pinch ran for Barnes and stole second base to move into scoring position. Kelcy Walker (Sr., San Antonio) then sacrificed Nieto to third base with just one out. However, Lia Provence (Fr., Bastrop) popped out to first and Kelly Baker (Fr., Arlington) struck out to end the threat.

The game remained scoreless until the eighth inning when the Mustangs finally broke through against Magee. With one out Maranda Bishop singled to right-center. However, Magee came back to strike out Jessica Rodriguez for the second out. Bishop then stole second and Kristen Stonecipher hit a ball to shortstop that looked to be an inning-ending ground-out. However, Sade Moore (Jr., Angleton) bobbled the ball and her throw to first was late. Bishop never stopped and scored on the play, breaking the scoreless tie. After Stonecipher stole second Lindsay Craig hit another ball up the middle that Moore couldn’t field cleanly for an infield single to score Stonecipher with the second run.

In the bottom of the inning Nikki Flores (Jr., Friendswood) walked with one out, but Sarah Cooper (Sr., Houston) fouled out and Moore grounded out to end the game.

In other action on Wednesday, #3 Southeastern Oklahoma State used a no-hitter by Marjorie Johnson to defeat the University of Central Oklahoma, 2-0. Top-seed Angelo State University rolled to a 9-1 win in five innings. St. Edward’s University used a two-out, three-run homerun in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally for a 3-1 win over Abilene Christian University.

With the loss the Rattlers fell to 53-11 this season, while Midwestern State improved to 36-27. The Rattlers fell into the loser’s bracket with the loss and will face Central Oklahoma in an elimination game on Thursday at 11 a.m.
