ODESSA – 25th-ranked St. Mary’s University pounded out 11 hits to back up the strong pitching of Scott Shimek as the Rattlers picked up a split against the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, 2-4, 15-4, in Heartland Conference baseball action Friday afternoon at Roden Field.

Shimek (Jr., Shiner) allowed four runs on nine hits, while striking out seven in eight innings to remain undefeated this season at 7-0.

Offensively, four Rattlers had four players with at least two hits and smacked a total of four homeruns in the game. David Vaio (Jr., San Antonio) went 2-of-4 with a double, homerun four RBI and two runs scored. Michael Brzezinski (Jr., San Antonio) smacked a three-run homerun, while Jonathon Rosfeld (Fr., San Antonio) had two hits and a homerun. Reagan Mocyzemba (Fr., Bulverde) went 3-of-5 with three runs scored.

The Rattlers started fast in the game, with a pair of two run singles to take a 4-0 lead. Jonathon Cisneros (So., San Antonio) had a two-run single and Daniel Soto (So., Lytle) followed with a two-run single of his own in the inning. The Rattlers started to pull away in the sixth inning when Vaio smacked a three-run homerun.

In the first game Flynn Stachowski limited the Rattlers to just one unearned run on six hits in six innings in a 4-2 UTPB win. Braxton Watson (Jr. Spring) fell to 6-3 on the season, allowing four runs on four hits in a complete game effort.

With the split the Rattlers are now 26-9 overall and 22-6 in Heartland Conference play. UTPB is now 24-12, 19-11. The teams will wrap up their series on Saturday with a single game, starting at noon in Odessa.
