San Antonio – Taryn Munoz tossed a three-hit shutout to lead 14th-ranked St. Mary’s University to a split against Tarleton State University, 1-2, 4-0, in a non-conference softball doubleheader Friday afternoon at Rattler Field.

Munoz (So., Bulverde) was dominant in the win in game two. She allowed just three hits and one walk in the seven inning complete game. No runner reached second base in the game. She struck out three to improve to 8-2 overall this season.

Meanwhile offensively, the Rattlers scored four runs over the first three innings and cruised from there. Sade Moore (Jr., Angleton) smacked an RBI single and later scored in the second inning to give the Rattlers a 3-0 lead. The Rattlers increased the lead to 4-0 in the third when Chelsea Wenske (Fr., Victoria) scored on a ground out by Nikki Flores (Jr., Friendswood).

In the first game of the doubleheader Malissa Magee (Sr., Katy) was strong on the mound, but one mistake, a two-run homerun by Laura Mehl, was enough to lift the Texans to the win. Magee struck out 10, while allowing just two runs on six hits and two walks. She fell to 20-4 with the loss.

The Rattlers outhit the Texans 7-6 in the game, but only scored once, on an RBI single by Mary K Pederson (Sr., Houston) in the fifth inning that scored Moore. The Rattlers left seven runners on base in the game. Moore had three of the Rattlers seven hits in game one.

With the split St. Mary’s is now 29-7 overall this season, while Tarleton State is now 13-15. The Rattlers will return to action on Friday, March 28, when they travel to Goodwell, Okla., to face Oklahoma Panhandle State University in a Heartland Conference series.
