WICHITA, KAN.–Newman University won a defensive battler with St. Mary’s University, 2-0, in men’s soccer action Friday night in the Heartland Conference opener for both teams. With the loss, the Rattlers fell to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in Heartland Conference play this season.

The two teams combined for just 16 shots in the game and just five on goal. However, the game did have 45 combined fouls and two yellow cards issued.

Both teams did have their chances, with a combined 12 corner kicks. In the first half the Rattlers had four corner kicks and two shots on goal, but couldn’t get past Jet keeper Emmanuel Gutierrez. Newman then took advantage, taking the lead in the 29th minute on a goal by Marshall Johnston.

That was where things would stay for the next 55 minutes, until Joe Gerrant picked up an insurance goal for the Jets in the 85th minute to put the game out of reach.

St. Mary’s will return to action on Sunday when they travel to Odessa to face the University of Texas of the Permian Basin (4-0 overall, 0-0 Heartland) in a Heartland Conference matchup.
