AUSTIN – St. Mary’s University fired a final round 304 and finished eighth at the NCAA South Central Region Tournament Wednesday at Grey Stone Golf Club. Individually Matt Vela placed 21st overall for the Rattlers.

Vela (Fr., San Antonio) struggled in the final round, shooting a 79 to finish with a three-round total of 224 (75-70-79), good for a tie for 21st overall. Peter Svaljen of Cameron took medalist honors with a 208 (68-70-70), one stroke ahead of Collin Mayer of St. Edward’s University. Jeff Howard of St. Edward’s was third with a 210, while teammate Andrew Workman was fourth with a 212.

As a team St. Edward’s ran away with the team title, shooting a three-round total of 841 (278-280-283). Abilene Christian was second with an 872 (299-292-281), 31 strokes behind. Cameron was third, while St. Mary’s was eighth with a 907 (305-298-304).

Jimmy Willingham (Sr., San Antonio) took 29th place with a 228 (72-77-79), Alex Maurer (Jr., St. Louis) was 32nd with a 230 (79-77-74), Preston Akromis (Jr., San Antonio) was 34th with a 231 (79-78-74) and James Grant (So., San Antonio) was 38th with a 232 (81-74-77).

With the finish at the NCAA South Central Regional, the Rattlers completed play for the 2008-09 season. They finished second at the Heartland Conference Championships, with Vela taking second as an individual.
