ABILENE – The St. Mary’s University men’s golf team opened the 2008-2009 season by placing 13th at the Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate Golf Tournament, held at the Diamondback Golf Course on Tuesday.

Leading the way for the Rattlers was Alex Maurer (Sr., St. Louis, Mo.), who tied for 13th place with a two-round total of 144 (69-75). He finished eight strokes behind medalist Collin Mayer of St. Edward’s University, who fired back-to-back 68s to pick up the win.

Matt Vela (So., San Antonio) placed 28th overall with a 147 (75-72), Preston Akromis (Sr., San Antonio) was 62nd with a 156 (79-77), James Grant (Jr., San Antonio) and Jadon Mehra (So., San Antonio) tied for 66th with identical scores of 157. Sam Jernigan (Fr., San Antonio) played as an individual in his first tournament as a Rattler, and placed 44th with a 151 (76-75).

In the team standings, St. Edward’s took top honors, firing a two-round total of 559 (276-283). Cameron University was second with a 569 (286-283) and host Abilene Christian was third with a 575 (284-291). St. Mary’s placed 13th overall with a two-round total of 601 (302-299).

The Rattlers will return to action on Monday, Sept. 22, at the Northeastern State Invitational Tournament.
