San Antonio – St. Mary’s University softball player Malissa Magee was named Heartland Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week for her play over the first two weeks of the season, it was announced by the league office on Thursday.

Magee (Sr., Katy) posted a 6-1 record with a 2.09 ERA against some of the top competition in the South Central Region. She has appeared in nine of the Rattlers first 10 games and tossed 50.1 of the team’s 68.0 innings. She has struck out 59 batters in 50.1 innings. She also has five complete games in her six starts, including two shutouts. She also has one save. Opponents are hitting just .201 against her this season.

Her best performance of the early season came last Saturday as she led the Rattlers to the tournament championship at the CBS Insurance Classic in Abilene. She scattered just three hits in the complete game shutout of the Southeastern Oklahoma State University. She also tossed a three-hit shutout against 17th-ranked Midwestern State University, leading the Rattlers to the championship of the St. Mary’s NCAA Division II College Classic.

Magee has already been named Heartland Conference Pitcher of the Year all three of her years with the Rattlers. She has been named NCAA Division II All-American twice and is the Rattlers all-time leader in strikeouts, innings pitched and shutouts.

St. Mary’s is 8-2 overall this season and has won the first two tournaments they have played in this season. The Rattlers will return to action today when they travel to Phoenix, Ariz., to play in the National Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association Lead-off Classic. They will play fourth-ranked Humboldt State on Thursday in their first game.
