San Antonio – Scott Shimek tossed six innings of two-hit ball and the St. Mary’s University offense pounded out 13 hits to lead the Rattlers to a sweep of Oklahoma Panhandle State University in Heartland Conference baseball action Friday afternoon at V.J. Keefe Memorial Stadium. The Rattlers won game one 5-2, and game two 9-2.

Shimek (Jr., Katy) allowed just one unearned run on two hits and two walks, while striking out nine in his first career start. Tyler Cales (Jr., San Antonio) and Jose Borges (So., San Juan, Puerto Rico) worked the last three innings as the Rattlers held the Aggies to a combined two runs on six hits.

Offensively 11 different Rattlers had at least one hit, with Michael Brzezinski (Jr., Helotes) and Reagan Moczygemba (Fr., Bulverde) each posting two hits. Brzezinski smashed his first homerun of the season, a two-run blast in the seventh inning.

In the first game of the day the Rattlers fell behind 2-0 in the first inning, then settled down and shut down the Aggies the rest of the way. Brandon Key (Jr., Katy) allowed just two hits, but had seven walks in improving to 1-0 on the season. Frank Flores (Sr., San Antonio) came on in the sixth inning and retired five of the six batters he faced for his first save of the season.

Offensively the Rattlers rallied to take the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Ryan Morrow (Fr., Bulverde) and Moczygemba each had RBI singles to help the Rattlers to a three-run inning to give the Rattlers a 4-2 lead.

With the sweep the Rattlers improved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in Heartland Conference play. OPSU fell to 1-4 and 0-2. The teams will wrap up their three-game series on Saturday morning with a single game, starting at 11 a.m.
