San Antonio–Jonathon Rosfeld led a potent St. Mary’s University offensive attack with six hits as the Rattlers swept a Heartland Conference doubleheader against Newman University, 9-3, 12-4, in baseball action Friday afternoon at V.J. Keefe Memorial Stadium.

Rosfeld (Fr., San Antonio) lifted his batting aveage to .426 for the season, going a combined 6-of-8 with four RBI and five runs scored, his best day as a Rattler. In the first game he was a perfect 3-of-3 with three runs scored. Reagan Moczygemba (Fr., Bulverde) also had multiple hits in both games, going 2-of-4 in game one and 2-of-5 in game two.

In the first game the Rattlers broke open a close game in the fourth inning when Jonathon Cisneros (So., San Antonio) smashed his fifth homerun of the season – a two-run blast – as the Rattlers pulled away for the 9-3 win. Braxton Watson (Jr., Spring) pitched his second complete game of the season, allowing just three runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out five in improving to 2-1 this season.

In the second game Scott Shimek (Jr., Shiner) struck out 12 in seven innings and allowed just one earned run on seven hits and two walks in picking up his second win against no losses.  Daniel Soto (So., Lytle) came within a homerun of hitting for the cycle, going 3-of-5 with a double, triple, three RBI and three runs scored. Soto’s two-run triple tied the game and led to a nine-run outburst over the fourth and fifth innings as the Rattlers pulled away for the easy win.

With the sweep the Rattlers broke a four-game losing streak and improved to 11-5 overall, 9-3 in Heartland Conference play. Newman fell to 3-9, 1-9. The teams will wrap up their three-game series on Saturday at noon at V.J. Keefe Memorial Stadium.
