San Antonio – Amanda Anderson finished second overall, leading a string of five St. Mary’s University players finishing in the top 10 overall as the Rattlers rolled to the team title at the Alamo City Classic Tuesday afternoon at the River Crossing Golf Club. The men’s golf team finished in a tie for 10th at The Territory Classic Tuesday afternoon in Duncanville, Okla.

Anderson (Sr., San Antonio) fired a second round 77 to finish second overall, her best finish of the 2008 fall season. She finished the tournament with a two-round total of 158 (81-77). Taking medalist honors was Marissa Mauldin of Southwestern University, who won by 14 strokes with a 140 (70-70).

Jenna Wessels (Jr., Katy) was third overall with a 159 (82-77), Ursula Perez (So., San Antonio) tied for fifth overall with a 163 (81-82), Marie Hulsey (Jr., El Paso) was seventh with a 164 (82-82), Alejandra Cantu (Fr., Mission) was eighth with a 166 (84-82), Erika Patterson (Fr., San Antonio) finished 23rd with a 179 (94-85) and Sonya Sanchez (Jr., McCamey) was 26th with a 184 (96-88).

St. Mary’s ran away with the team title, finishing the two-round tournament with a 644 (326-318), 16 strokes ahead of runner-up, the University of Texas at Brownsville. McMurry University was third with a 699, Hardin-Simmons University was fourth with a 702, Mary Hardin-Baylor was fifth with a 714 and Texas Lutheran was sixth with a 743.

The women’s golf team will wrap up the fall season at the University of Hawaii-Hilo Classic on Monday, Oct. 27-28, in Hilo, Hawaii.

Matt Vela (So., San Antonio) fired an even par 72 in the final round of The Territory Classic to finish tied for 20th overall. The top-20 finish was the third in four fall tournaments for Vela. Zack Poole of East Central University defeated Austin Bowman of the University of Central Oklahoma in a playoff for medalist honors. Both players finished the tournament with four-under par 140s.

Alex Maurer (Sr., St. Louis, Mo.) was one stroke behind Vela in a tie for 26th place with a 149 (76-73), James Grant (Jr., San Antonio) placed 35th overall with a 151 (78-73), Sam Jernigan (Fr., San Antonio) finished tied for 40th with a 152 (76-76), Jadon Mehra (So., San Antonio) was 49th with a 154 (78-76) and Preston Akromis (Sr., San Antonio) placed 67th with a 165 (81-84).

In the team standings Central Oklahoma defeated St. Edward’s University by seven strokes, 577 to 584. Arkansas Tech was third, Southwestern Oklahoma State University and Abilene Christian University tied for fourth, Northeastern State University was sixth, Cameron University and the University of the Southwest tied for seventh, Texas A&M University-Commerce was ninth and Delta State University and St. Mary’s tied for 10th. There were 14 teams competing in the tournament.

With the finish, the men’s golf team wrapped up the fall season. They will return to action for the spring season starting in February.
