San Antonio – Malissa Magee allowed just one run over seven innings, while Lindsay Barnes drove home three runs, helping to lead the ninth ranked St. Mary’s University Rattlers to a 4-2 win over the University of Central Oklahoma on the first day of the St. Mary’s NCAA Division II Collegiate Classic Softball Tournament, Friday afternoon at the San Antonio Independent School District Spring Sports Complex.

Two-time All-American Magee (Sr., Katy) had a shutout through six innings and finished the game by allowing just one earned run on nine hits and one walk, while striking out six. Magee is now 1-0 this season, while Hillary Brandt fell to 0-1, allowing four runs on five hits and one walk in just two innings of work.

The Rattlers wasted no time in getting the lead against the Bronchos. Sade Moore (Jr., Angleton) led off with a single to left and Mary K Pederson (Sr., Houston) followed with a single up the middle. After Kelcy Walker (Sr., San Antonio) walked to load the bases, Lindsay Barnes (Sr., San Antonio) followed with a two-run double to give the Rattlers a 2-0 lead. Kelly Baker reached on an error that allowed Walker to score for a 3-0 St. Mary’s advantage.

In the second inning the Rattlers added another run. Moore singled to lead off and moved to second on a Pederson sacrifice, then came home when Barnes smacked a single to center, making the score 4-0.

Moore finished the game 2-of-4 with two runs scored, while Barnes was 2-of-3 with three RBI.

The Rattlers improved to 1-0, while UCO fell to 1-1. The Rattlers will continue play at the Classic on Saturday with a pair of games, starting with Eastern New Mexico University at 11:15 a.m., followed by a game against Southeastern Oklahoma State University at 6 p.m.
