San Antonio – Ashton Benford scored 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to help St. Mary’s University to a solid 63-44 win over Lincoln University in Heartland Conference women’s basketball action Saturday afternoon at Bill Greehey Arena.

Benford (So., Waxahachie) hit on 7-of-10 shots from the field to lead all scorers in the game. Joining her in double figures was Charlena Rodez (Sr., Cedar Park) with 14 points and Natalie Gamez (So., San Antonio) with 10 points.

As a team the Rattlers shot 47.9 percent (23-48) from the field, including 41.7 percent from three-point range (5-12). They also hit on 70.6 percent (12-17) shots from the free throw line. They held Lincoln to just 28.8 percent (15-52) shooting from the field in the game.

The Rattlers scored the first eight points of the game and started out with a 17-2 run to take a big advantage that they would never lose. The Blue Tigers cut the Rattler advantage to single digits just once before St. Mary’s increased the edge to as much as 24 points in the second half.

For Lincoln Tiffannie Wolfe and Brezette Elder-Wade led the way with 10 points each.

With the win the Rattlers improved to 8-14 overall and 4-4 in Heartland Conference play. Lincoln fell to 5-18 and 2-6. St. Mary’s will return to action on Tuesday when they host Montana State University-Billings in a non-conference game at 6 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena.
