San Antonio – St. Mary’s University baseball players Michael Brzezinski and Tommy Vrzal were both named second team Daktronics All-South Central Region for their play this season, it was announced by the organization recently.

Brzezinski (So., Helotes) followed up an outstanding freshman season with an even better sophomore campaign. He led the Rattlers and the Heartland Conference in batting for the second straight season with a .408 average, the 10th highest single-season average in school history. His career average of .404 is the fourth highest for a career in school history. He had eight doubles, six triples, eight homeruns, 43 RBI, 64 runs scored and 12 stolen bases this season. His 64 runs scored are the eighth most and his six triples ties for third most in school history for a single season. He also committed just one error in 108 chances in the outfield. Brzezinski was also named first team All-Heartland Conference.

Vrzal (Sr., San Antonio) led the team with a 9-1 record and a 3.14 ERA in 14 appearances. He made 13 starts, had five complete games and one shutout. He was named Heartland Conference Pitcher of the Week after tossing his first career no-hitter for the Rattlers against Oklahoma Panhandle State. He threw 80.1 innings on the mound, second most on the squad and struck out 78 batters. Opposing batters hit just .194 against him. He was also named first team All-Heartland Conference and earned Heartland Pitcher of the Week honors once.

The Rattlers finished the 2007 regular season with a 38-16 overall record and a 30-10 mark in Heartland Conference play. St. Mary’s finished the regular season second in the Heartland Conference, just one game behind St. Edward’s, who had a 31-9 HC mark.
