San Antonio–Fourth-ranked the University of the Incarnate Word scored two second half goals to break open a close game and defeated St. Mary’s University, 3-0, in Heartland Conference women’s soccer action Sunday afternoon.

Despite the loss of their starting goalkeeper to an injury, the Rattlers were able to hold the nationally ranked Cardinals to just a goal by Keri Dawson in the 20th minute and trailed just 1-0 at the break. However, UIW scored again in the 55th minute on a strike by Sarah Hernandez and Sarah Arditti put the final score on the board late in the game.

The Cardinals outshot the Rattlers 20-7 in the game and took five corner kicks to none for the Rattlers.

On Friday the Rattlers broke a two-game losing streak with a 2-0 win over Texas A&M International University in Laredo. St. Mary’s battled to a 0-0 tie for the first 80 minutes before finally breaking through late in the game. Christiana Mercedes (Fr., San Antonio) broke the ice in the 80th minute, taking a pass from Ana Primera (So., San Antonio) and putting the Rattlers up 1-0. Four minutes later Amanda McMullan added her fifth goal of the season to ice the game.

With the loss on Sunday the Rattlers ended the 2007 season with a 9-10-1 overall record and a 5-6-1 mark in Heartland Conference play. UIW improved to 17-2-1, 11-1.
