San Antonio – Clare Ewald scored the lone goal of the game in the 43rd minute as Newman University defeated St. Mary’s University, 1-0, in Heartland Conference women’s soccer action Sunday afternoon at St. Mary’s University Soccer Field.

The loss for the Rattlers came despite the fact that the Rattlers outshot the Jets 16-4 in the game. St. Mary’s outshot Newman 7-2 in the first half, but the second of those two shots wound up being the difference in the game. After a St. Mary’s offensive attack the ball was cleared out of the Jet end of the field. Diana Santillian picked up the ball in Rattlers territory about 40 yards from the goal. She then crossed the ball to Ewald in the middle of the penalty area and Ewald one-touched the ball into the left corner of the net, just out of the reach of goalkeeper Jamie Talley (Fr., Iowa Park).

In the second half the Rattler domination continued, but the Rattlers were unable to score on Jet goalkeeper Jennifer Davis, who made seven saves in picking up the shutout.

With the loss the Rattlers fell to 8-8-1 overall and 4-4-1 in Heartland Conference action. Newman improved to 5-8-3 and 2-4-3. St. Mary’s will return to action on Tuesday when they host St. Edward’s University in the final home game of the season at 3 p.m. at St. Mary’s University Soccer Field.
