San Antonio – St. Mary’s University men’s soccer players David Peterson and Jayson Horn were named Heartland Conference Men’s Soccer Players of the Week for their performances against the University of the Incarnate Word and the University of St. Thomas, it was announced by the league office on Wednesday.

Peterson (Fr., Saginaw) continued his incredible freshman season last week, leading the Rattlers to two wins. Peterson scored the only goal of the game in the Rattlers 1-0 win over Incarnate Word, St. Mary’s first win over the Cardinals in nine meetings. The game-winning goal was his third of the season. He followed that up by scoring twice in the Rattlers 4-1 win over St. Thomas. For the season Peterson now has a team-high eight goals on just 22 shots. He is tied for first in the Heartland Conference and 32nd nationally, in goals per game. The award marked the second time this season that Peterson has earned Heartland Offensive Player of the week honors.

Horn (Jr., San Antonio) earned Heartland Defensive Player of the Week honors for the first time after allowing just one goal in two games last week. Against Incarnate Word he faced 14 shots, making four saves in the Rattlers 1-0 upset win over the Cardinals. He followed that up by holding the University of St. Thomas to just one goal in a 4-1 win. For the week Horn had a 0.50 goals-against average and made six saves. For the season he has a 1.34 goals-against average with 23 saves and three shutouts.

The Rattlers enter this week’s play with a 6-6 overall record this season. St. Mary’s will return to action on Friday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m. when they travel to Wichita, Kan., to face Newman University in a Heartland Conference matchup. They will follow that up with a game on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. against the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.
