San Antonio – St. Mary’s University men’s basketball coach Jim Zeleznak announced on Thursday the signing of San Antonio native and former Fox Academic and Technical High School standout Maurice Steen to a National Letter of Intent to join the Rattlers, starting with the 2007-08 academic year.

Steen comes to St. Mary’s as a sophomore after playing at Paris Junior College for one year for coach Bill Foy. He earned second team All-Region 14 Athletic Conference recognition after averaging 12.5 points per game. He hit on 42.3 percent of his shots from the field and 70.6 of his shots from the free throw line. He helped the Dragons to the regular season title in Region 14 and an appearance at the Region 14 tournament.

Prior to his time at PJC Steen was a standout for Coach Charles Cooper at Fox Tech. He was named team MVP and first team all-city after averaging 21.6 points per game. He also competed on the Fox Tech football team.

“Maurice is a very talented athlete that has that innate ability to score in a variety of ways,” Zeleznak said. “He has the potential to be a difference-maker on both ends of the floor. We are very excited that Maurice is part of the St. Mary’s basketball family.”

The Rattlers finished the 2006-07 season with a 16-12 record, good for third in the Heartland Conference regular season standings.
