San Antonio – Samantha Weber and Kori McCarver combined for 25 kills, but the University of the Incarnate Word pulled away late in each of the three games to sweep St. Mary’s University, 30-27, 30-27, 30-25, in Heartland Conference volleyball action Wednesday night at Bill Greehey Arena.

The Rattlers had late leads in all three games, but were unable to finish off the games. In game one they led 23-22, but saw the Cardinals outscore them 8-4 to win the game. In game two the Rattlers led 26-24, but only scored one more point in falling 30-27. In game three they trailed just 21-20, but again struggled down the stretch.

Weber (Sr., Fort Lupton, Colo.) had 13 kills against just four attack errors for a .333 attack percentage, while McCarver (Fr., San Antonio) had 12 kills against just two attack errors for a .455 attack percentage. As a team the Rattlers had 43 kills and a .195 attack percentage. Valerie Teter (Jr., San Antonio) had 19 digs to lead the defense.

Kim Kvapil led the Cardinals with 13 kills, while Edie Weise added 10. Sarah Nordman had 43 assists, six assists and four kills. As a team the Cardinals had 50 kills, seven blocks and seven service aces.

St. Mary’s fell to 13-13 overall and 7-5 in Heartland Conference play. Incarnate Word improved 20-7, 11-1. The Rattlers will return to action on Friday when they hit the road for Warrensburg, Mo., to take on the University of Central Missouri at 7 p.m.
