San Antonio – St. Mary’s University was defeated by the University of Incarnate Word, 8-1 in men’s tennis action and 9-0 in women’s tennis Friday afternoon at the UIW Tennis Courts.

For the men only Marcos Villarreal (Fr., Corpus Christi) was able to post a victory. Villarreal won the first set against Mike Hastings at number five singles, 7-6, before Hastings retired. No other Rattlers won a set against the Cardinals.

On the women’s side Tiffany Edward’s (So., San Antonio) had the strongest showing, but dropped a 6-4, 6-4, decision to Erica Engberg at number five singles. In number one doubles Allison Pino (Sr., Corpus Christi) and Hayley Harris (So., El Campo) took Nadia Pope and Andrea Prieto to the limit, but fell 8-6.

Both Rattler tennis teams fell to 0-1 on the season with the loss. Both teams will return to action on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. when they face Trinity University.
