IRVING – Jessica Harbin fired an opening round 73 to take a one-stroke lead, helping St. Mary’s University to a second place standing after the first round of the Heartland Conference Women’s Golf Tournament, played Monday afternoon at Hackberry Creek Country Club.

Harbin (Sr., Tuscola) fired 36 on the front nine of the par 72 course, and then shot 37 on the back nine. She had two birdies, on number eight and number 15 and three bogies. She has a one-stroke lead over Emily Kvinta of St. Edward’s and Heather Wilbur of Dallas Baptist, who each shot two-over 74s. No other golfer is within six strokes of Harbin. Harbin has earned All-Heartland Conference honors after placing second in each of the last two tournaments.

Elizabeth Brandt (Sr., Scottsdale) is in seventh place after firing a first round 83. Amanda Anderson (So., San Antonio) is tied for 11th with an opening round 87, while Marie Hulsey (Fr., El Paso) is tied for 15th with a 90.

St. Edward’s leads the team competition with a 325, while St. Mary’s is just eight strokes back at 333, good for second place. Host Dallas Baptist University is third with a 338, while Newman University is fourth with a 350. Montana State University-Billings is fifth with a 375, Incarnate Word is sixth with a 380 and Oklahoma Panhandle State is seventh with a 451.

Play will conclude at the Heartland Conference Championships on Tuesday with the final round at the Hackberry Creek Country Club.
