San Antonio – Kyle Farrell’s header off a corner kick found the back of the net and lifted the St. Mary’s University Rattlers to a 2-1 win over St. Edward’s University in Heartland Conference men’s soccer action Sunday afternoon at St. Mary’s University Soccer Field.

Farrell (So., Edmond, Okla.) was waiting when Scott Kilpatrick’s (Sr., Converse) corner kick floated into the box, went off Kris Sumter (Sr., San Antonio) and was in perfect position for the header into the back of the net. The goal came with 1:13 left in the contest and gave the Rattlers a 2-1 lead.

The goal culminated the Rattler comeback from a 1-0 halftime deficit. The Rattlers controlled play in the first half, outshooting the Hilltoppers 7-4, but only had one shot on goal. SEU took the lead when Josh Nannen took a through ball from Brad Bullock behind the defense, dribbled in and beat goalkeeper Jayson Horn (Jr., San Antonio) to the corner, giving the Hilltoppers a 1-0 lead at the break.

St. Mary’s continued to apply pressure against the Hilltopper defense, but to no avail, until the 72nd minute. That was when Bryon Plagge (Jr., San Antonio) dribbled through four defenders to get a one-on-one with the goalkeeper and beat Chris Sanders for the tying goal at the 71:41 mark. That set up Farrell’s heroics. For Plagge, it was the third goal of the season.

The Rattlers finished the season by outshooting the Hilltoppers 17-5. The game was a physical affair with 37 combined fouls.

With the win the Rattlers finished the 2007 season with an 8-12 record, including a 5-5 mark in Heartland Conference play. St. Edward’s finished the season at 9-10-1 and 7-3.
