San Antonio – St. Mary’s University right-handed pitcher Caleb Staudt was drafted by Major League  Team Washington Nationals in the 39th round of the Major League Baseball Draft, which was conducted Friday.

Staudt (Sr., Leander) overcame an early season injury to finish with a 5-1 record and one complete game in 41.1 innings of work. He started eight games and had a 3.48 ERA. He struck out 35, while walking just 23. Opposing batters hit .252 against him. Staudt was named Heartland Conference Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

He was the 1169th pick of the draft, going to the Nationals in the 39th round overall. In his career Staudt had a 22-8 record in 61 appearances on the mound, including 31 starts. He had 12 complete games and three shutouts. He had 187 strikeouts against 116 walks in 211.0 innings of work.

The Rattlers finished the 2007 regular season with a 38-16 overall record and a 30-10 mark in Heartland Conference play. St. Mary’s finished the regular season second in the Heartland Conference, just one game behind St. Edward’s, who had a 31-9 HC mark.
