San Antonio – The St. Mary’s University women’s basketball team used a 16-5 run over the first five minutes of the second half and eased their way to a 60-49 victory over Huston-Tillotson Saturday at Branch Gymnasium in Austin. The Rattler men fell by a 64-42 count at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo.

Natalie Gamez (Jr., San Antonio) turned in a double-double totals of 23 points and 10 rebounds (game-highs in both categories) to lead the Rattlers. Gamez sank 10-of-15 from the free throw line. Ashton Benford (Jr., Waxahachie) and Mallory Moeller (Fr., Seguin) scored nine points apiece for St. Mary’s.

The Rattlers retained control throughout the second half by more than doubling the Lady Rams in shooting percentage. St. Mary’s connected on 10-of-17 field goals (59 percent) during the final 20 minutes, compared to Huston-Tillotson’s 26-percent-shooting from the field (9-of-35).

Bethany Roden led the Lady Rams with 11 points, going 4-of-7 from the field. Faviela Parrilla finished one basket shy of a double-double, scoring eight points and pulling down 10 rebounds. She secured four offensive rebounds in the second half.

With the win the Rattler women are now 3-4 overall and have won two straight. Huston-Tillotson is now 0-5 this season. The Rattlers will return to action on Friday when they travel to Arkadelphia, Ark., to take on Ouachita Baptist at 6 p.m.

For the men, UCM used a stifling defense to limit the Rattlers to just 42 points, while holding St. Mary’s to just 37.0 percent shooting from the field. No Rattlers reached double figures in the game, with Allen Coleman (Sr., Corpus Christi) leading the team in scoring with nine points.

With the loss the Rattlers fell to 3-3 overall this season, while UCM remains undefeated at 5-0. St. Mary’s will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Kingsville to face Texas A&M University-Kingsville at 7 p.m.
