San Antonio – Caleb Staudt was nearly flawless in game one, while the Rattler offense woke up to the tune of 17 hits and 15 runs, helping St. Mary’s University to a sweep of Tarleton State University, 10-2, 5-4, in baseball action Sunday afternoon at V.J. Keefe Memorial Stadium.

Staudt (Sr., Leander) allowed just one unearned run on two hits and five walks, while striking out four in five innings of work to even his record at 1-1 on the season. Michael Villarreal (So., Eagle Pass) completed the win on the mound with a pair of innings of work.

Offensively the Rattlers woke up from their 20-inning scoreless streak with two runs in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead. Ray Camacho (Sr., Converse) ended the streak with a two-run single, scoring Ryan Femath (Sr., El Paso) and David Vaio (So., San Antonio). The following inning they scored three runs and added five more in the sixth.

In the nightcap the Rattlers again came from behind, scoring four runs over the fifth and sixth innings to take a 4-2 lead. However, the bullpen was unable to hold the lead and the Rattlers needed a seventh inning rally for the win. Danny Cantu (So., Laredo) walked to lead off, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Femath. He then advanced to third on a wild pitch. One out later Michael Brzezinski (So., Helotes) singled up the middle to score Cantu with the winning run.

Tommy Vrzal (Sr., San Antonio) tossed five strong innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits and one walk, while striking out six. Frank Flores (Jr., San Antonio) retired the only batter he faced to pick up his first win as a Rattler.

With the wins the Rattlers evened their record at 2-2 on the season, while Tarleton State fell to 2-6. St. Mary’s will return to action on Friday when they host Lincoln University in a Heartland Conference doubleheader, starting at 2 p.m. The doubleheader is the first of a four-game series for the Rattlers.
