AUSTIN – 28th-ranked St. Mary’s University crushed #18 St. Edward’s University, 18-4 in game two of their doubleheader to forge a split in Heartland Conference baseball action Friday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field.

St. Mary’s fell behind 2-1 in the first inning before rallying to take a 3-2 lead in the third. Three more runs in the fourth inning gave them a commanding 6-2 edge. However, the Hilltoppers came back again, scoring two in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to just two at 6-4. But St. Mary’s pulled away in the final two innings, exploding for 12 runs in the sixth and seventh to cruise to the win.

Tommy Vrzal (Sr., San Antonio) picked up his third win of the season, while Frank Flores (Jr., San Antonio) picked up his second save.

Offensively the Rattlers posted 18 hits, with Ricky Gonzalez (Jr., Houston) and Ray Camacho (Sr., Converse) leading the way with 4-for-4 games. Cody Pyle (Sr., Spring Branch) had his seventh homerun of the season, while Danny Cantu (So., Laredo) picked up his first of the season and Michael Pawelek (Sr., San Antonio) added his third.

In the first game of the day the Hilltoppers scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to pick up the 2-1 win. Zach Kucera (Jr., Spring) dropped to 2-2 on the season, despite allowing just four hits on the day.

With the split the Rattlers are now 15-5 overall and is 12-2 in HC play. St. Edward’s fell to 18-3 overall and 13-1 in HC play. The two teams will wrap up their four-game Heartland Conference series on Saturday with a doubleheader at Lucien-Hamilton Field, starting at noon.
