San Antonio – Ben Maynard scattered five hits over nine innings and the 21st-ranked St. Mary’s University defense committed five errors as the 16th-ranked Abilene Christian University Wildcats defeated the Rattlers 8-0 Tuesday night at Crutcher Scott Field.

Maynard allowed just five hits and walked none, while striking out four in the nine-inning complete game performance. He is now 1-0 on the season. Caleb Staudt (Sr., Leander) took the loss, allowing seven runs on six hits and three walks over 3.1 innings of work.

Jonathon Cisneros (Fr., San Antonio) was one of the lone brigt spots, going 2-of-3 with a double for the Rattlers. Michael Brzezinski (So., Helotes), David Vaio (So., San Antonio) and Ryan Femath (Sr., El Paso) also had base hits. The hit for Vaio was his first collegiate hit.

After a pair of scoreless innings to star the game, ACU picked up three runs in the third and four more in the fourth to break the game open.

With the loss the Rattlers fell to 0-1 on the season, while ACU remained undefeated at 4-0. St. Mary’s will return to action on Friday at 5 p.m. when they travel to Corpus Christi for a single game against Texas A&M-Kingsville at 5 p.m. They will open their home schedule on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they host Tarleton State University in a doubleheader at V.J. Keefe Field.
