San Antonio – Longtime rivals St. Mary’s University and the University of the Incarnate Word will match up in three different sports this week as Heartland Conference play heats up this week.

The men’s soccer team (4-6-0 Overall, 2-2-0 Heartland) will face the fourth-ranked Cardinals in desperate need of a win. The Rattlers have dropped four straight games, including a 2-0 decision to UIW in Boerne on Sept. 23. The Rattlers fell twice on the road last week, 2-1 at Eastern New Mexico University and 4-0 at West Texas A&M University. The teams will meet on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. on the St. Mary’s University Soccer Field. The men will remain home on Friday to host St. Thomas University at 4:30 p.m.

The volleyball team will complete the day-night doubleheader with Incarnate Word when they travel across town to face the Cardinals at 7 p.m. The Rattlers rebounded from a tough road loss to Dallas Baptist University with a five-game win over the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, who was undefeated in Heartland play entering that match. The win on the road lifted the Rattlers to within one game of the Heartland lead with a 4-2 record. UTPB and UIW are tied for the lead with 5-1 marks. St. Edward’s is fourth with a 3-3 record. The Rattlers will step out of conference play on Friday when they host St. Thomas University at 5 p.m. at the soccer fields.

The women’s soccer team hits the road this week to take on Newman University in a Heartland Conference matchup in Wichita, Kan. The Rattlers (6-5-0, 2-1-0 Heartland) will face the Jets at 7 p.m.

The women’s cross country team will face off with Incarnate Word and others at the Incarnate Word Invitational on Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. at the San Antonio State School. The meet with be the fourth of the season for the Rattlers.

The softball team travels across town to compete in the Roadrunner Fall Classic on Saturday. The women’s golf team is in Wolfe City for the Lion Fall Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M University-Commerce today. The men’s golf team is at the Grand Canyon Fall Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz. Play will wrap up today for them as well.
